Katherine Perumal
Master of Counselling · Master of Teaching
Welcome — I’m glad you’re here.
I’m Katherine or Kat, and I offer thoughtful, supportive counselling for people going through challenging or uncertain times. I work alongside you, taking time to listen and understand, as you make sense of what you’re carrying and begin to find a way forward together.
I came to counselling through a deep interest in how we make sense of our experiences — particularly during times of change, loss or when emotions feel heavy or hard to manage. I believe healing happens most effectively in relationships where you feel respected, understood, and supported as we move forward together.
More About Me
-
When we work together, my approach is guided by care, respect and a genuine interest in your experience.
I work in a way that keeps you at the centre of the process. That means I listen carefully, follow your lead and support you to explore what feels most important for you — rather than directing or pushing you toward outcomes that don’t feel right.
I place a strong emphasis on choice and pacing. You decide what you want to share, when you want to share it and how we move forward together.
I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, guided by what you bring into the room and what feels most helpful for you. Sessions are shaped through thoughtful listening, reflection and being present with you as we make sense of things together.
I’m also mindful that past experiences — including grief, trauma or ongoing stress — can continue to influence how we feel and respond in the present. Counselling offers a way to gently explore these experiences, without pressure or expectation and with respect for your own timing.
-
What matters most to me in counselling is that the work feels grounded, compassionate and honest.
I value conversations that are respectful and thoughtful — where emotional experiences and relationships are both given space and taken seriously. For me, counselling is not about quick solutions or surface-level change but about slowing things down enough to really understand what’s happening beneath the surface.
I don’t believe people need to be “fixed.” I do believe people benefit from being met with understanding, supported with care and given space to reconnect with themselves in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable.

I have a Master of Counselling and a Master of Teaching. I am trained in counselling and psychotherapy and practise in line with professional and ethical standards.
I’m committed to ongoing learning, clinical supervision and reflective practice, which supports me to work thoughtfully and responsibly with the people I see. This ongoing process helps ensure my work remains ethical, responsive, and grounded in care.
I am a member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and practise in accordance with the ACA Code of Ethics and the National Standards for counselling practice.
Before we begin working together, I provide clear information about consent, confidentiality, fees and professional boundaries, so you can make informed decisions about counselling and know what to expect.
